Pilates for Universal Human Rights

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” - Article 1, Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

December marks Universal Human Rights Month, so we’re proud to announce proceeds from this month’s donation-based class will aid The Advocates for Human Rights. This topic has a fascinating history, so let’s dive into a quick lesson and how you can help.

The United Nations formed on October 24, 1945, following the atrocities and destruction of World War II. In 1946, the United Nations General Assembly began compiling a comprehensive document defining human rights and freedoms as an accompaniment to 1945’s Charter of the United Nations. After the Assembly reviewed the draft, they entrusted a “Functional Commission” known as the Commission on Human Rights and its Universal Declaration of Human Rights Drafting Committee for further revisions. The committee contained 18 representatives from diverse geographic, political, and philosophical influences led by committee chair Eleanor Roosevelt. The Commission first presented their completed draft in September 1948 and the document became adopted last that year on December 10. Hence the celebration of Universal Human Rights Month in December.

Based in Minneapolis, The Advocates for Human Rights aim, “to promote civil society and to reinforce the rule of law. By involving volunteers in research, education, and advocacy, we build broad constituencies in the United States and communities around the world.” Their work includes furthering women’s rights, ending human trafficking, advocating for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, strengthening international justice, and more.
